FONTHILL, A HISTORY
The mansion which became Fonthill was built for John Bickle of Hamilton, Ontario in the mid-Nineteenth century. It was known as such for the beautiful stone fountain at the top of the hill near to the estate. Jennie Herald, the daughter of Fonthill’s builder, later bought it in 1887. Known as a happy, welcoming home, Fonthill Manor often held charity fetes and public meetings during Jennie’s life and the lives of her children. The townspeople of Hamilton would often come up to the estate on a Sunday, to walk the gardens and visit the fountain for good luck. Upon Jennie’s death in the mid-1900s, the entire estate was given to the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE), known across the nation as a prominent organization of Canadian women. IODE continued to host charitable events during their stay at Fonthill, raising money to support the Canadian military and national literacy.
As a result of its age, Fonthill Manor has had to undergo several transformations, however the incredibly detailed woodwork and elegant comfort of the building are original. The graceful structure and period furnishings lay testament to the dedication of Fonthill’s builders and the care of those who reside within its walls.
